ANNA, GRANDPA, AND THE BIG STORM

ACTIVITIES:

1. In this story, people got from place to place by riding the elevated train. Make a chart that lists how people travel nowadays. Draw these methods of transportation.

2. Make a list of ten enjoyable things grandfathers and children can do together in a city. You may include pictures or drawings to illustrate this.

3. Make a chart of things that were used in 1888 based on ideas from the story and your own research. Then list the things that do the same job now. Have a Then and Now chart.

4. Create your own front page of a newspaper and write about the great blizzard of 1888. Pictures can certainly be included, as well as "interviews" from the people who experienced this event.

5. Organize your own spelling bee in the classroom. Choose 20 words from the story and write each one on a slip of paper. Put the slips into a box and have your teacher or you read them outloud. You may give a small prize to the winner.

6. Use an almanac or other reference to find out about the heaviest snowfall in your area. Write down when it happened and how many inches fell. You should find out about the snowiest areas in the United States or the world and record the data to present to the class.
