Department of Modern and Classical Languages

Statement on Plagiarism

I. Purpose of Statement

The following is a set of general guidelines established by the Language Department regarding the issue of plagiarism. The department considers plagiarism a serious violation of academic integrity, and students are responsible for avoiding it.

II. Definition of Plagiarism

The Language Department defines plagiarism as follows: it is an act of claiming another's work or ideas as one's own and failing to document the source of this work or these ideas.

Plagiarism undermines the Department's conviction that students acquire language skills most effectively when they practice these skills and that they learn best to become capable and creative thinkers by exercising their ability to present and develop their own insight. It is also the Department's belief that respect for peers requires giving them credit for their work and ideas.
